The Cafe at the Grounds is the signature go-to when you’re visiting the Grounds of Alexandria. Complete with all of their best coffees and organically tasty food! We went to the Café on our third visit – it’s always so packed so try to avoid peak hours if you’re not up for waiting a while.
Despite how busy the place gets, the staff are always at your service. We ordered our standard Cappuccino and Chai Latte, which we already know are the best from the Grounds. We wanted to try something different, so we got the Cobia Kingfish (instead of the usual Avo smash) and a Brekkie Board. The Cobia Kingfish ($17) is similar to an avocado smash, but topped with glorious fresh kingfish ceviche, and of course, fresh lime, chilli and coriander on layers of ripe avocados. There really is no star of the show on this dish – even the seeded toast is unforgettable and tasted just-baked! It was the perfect balance of delicious lightness and healthy protein to fill you up.
The Brekkie Board had two perfectly poached eggs – obviously, they were free-range and so soft and yolky on the inside – as well as chicken sausages, fresh ricotta, smoked salmon, grilled asparagus, cherry tomato & basil, cheese yoghurt, avocado, and 2 slices of toasted sourdough. This was enough to feed 2 (or maybe even 3) of us, but it definitely tastes good enough to be demolished by one! The combination of ingredients is everything you need at brunch, and as always with the Grounds, everything is crafted to pure excellence.
We couldn’t resist trying the juices after our meal, even though we were totally stuffed. We ordered the Coconut Fizz ($7) with lime, mint and soda – we didn’t completely love this, but it could be refreshing on a hot day – and the Pineapple, Watermelon and Passionfruit with Mint ($8) – which was not bad, but the Grounds could do better! In the end, we ended up getting a second round of coffees… Can’t go wrong.
